The most important procedure that can be done to lengthen the life of a printhead is to clean it!
Use the thermal head cleaner and lint free wipes as follows:
First, turn off the printer and open the printhead assembly. Lightly blow away any loose dust and lint particles within the print assembly (platen roller(s), and printhead). NEVER use a knife or a screwdriver(or the like) to remove adhesives or other contaminants that may have built up on the printhead or platen roller, this will most likely cause more damage, resulting in you replacing the part sooner than you planned on.
Next, spray some of the thermal head cleaner on to the lint free wipe, and lightly wipe the printhead elements from one end to the other. Repeat until the wipe does not show any residue. Using the same procedure, wipe the platen roller from one end to the other while turning the platen roller(if possible). Wipe the roller until you do not feel anymore adhesive on the roller. Throw away the wipe after you are done, never reuse it. Reload your labels and ribbon, close and latch the printhead, and turn the power back on. That's all there is to it!
Printhead and platen roller cleaning is recommended every time you go to change a roll or labels OR roll or ribbon, not just the roll of ribbon. We do offer ribbon that contains what is called "CleanStart" at the beginning of the roll that actually cleans the printhead as well. Instructions are included with each ribbon order on how to use it. If you are interested in this ribbon, please contact us with your printer model, ribbon size and formulation.
